1 dead, 1 charged with murder following fight in Giles County

GILES COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) — A man is facing multiple charges after an “altercation” in Giles County Friday night led to another man’s death, according to law enforcement.

The Giles County Sheriff’s Department said it responded to a business in Frankewing at approximately 9:50 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 26 for a report of an aggravated assault.

When deputies arrived at the scene, they found 32-year-old Douglas Winborn with a life-threatening injury, so they provided medical aid until EMS personnel arrived, according to officials. Winborn was brought to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.

Authorities said they found the suspect — identified as Justin Straw — at the scene and took him into custody without incident. Straw was reportedly booked into the Giles County Jail and charged with first-degree murder, aggravated assault, and domestic assault.

Meanwhile, law enforcement said investigators responded to the scene and worked with deputies through the night to process it.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim’s family and loved ones during this difficult time,” the sheriff’s department posted on Facebook on Saturday, Dec. 27.

No additional details have been released about this incident.
