Subject: Person Trapped in Burning Car/Heroic Rescue.
On 12/13/2023 Lawrence County Fire Rescue units were dispatched to a motor vehicle crash with injuries in the New Prospect Fire District. Chief Wade Marston responded to the crash immediately as a one man unit along with a one man unit from Crossroads FD,but due to short staffing he requested assistance from Lawrenceburg Fire Department and EMA.
Chief Marston arrived on scene to find the vehicle to be heavily involved in fire and that the trapped patient had been extricated from the vehicle. The responding units were able to quickly extinguish the fire.
It was after the fire was extinguished that Chief Marston learned that the driver of the vehicle had became trapped in the burning vehicle as a result of the crash. According to Chief Marston’s report, a neighbor, Carl Beckman was able to free the trapped patient from the burning vehicle using tools from his pick up truck. Carl was then joined by neighbor Jerry Krick who helped carry the patient away from the vehicle. There is no doubt that the incident would’ve had a much different outcome without Carl’s intervention.
Carl is no stranger to Lawrence County Fire Rescue as he has been a long time member of the New Prospect Fire Station where he still serves in the capacity of an associate member assisting with fundraisers and projects around the station. Carl is known for being resourceful and always equipped with tools. Thankfully for this patient Carl was in the right place at the right time.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the driver of the vehicle as she continues to recover from her injuries."
