Several local residents in Lawrence County have fell victim to a grand jury scam.

District attorney Brent Cooper offered the following statement regarding the recent scam:
"I have been contacted multiple times recently by concerned individuals who have received phone calls telling them that they are subject to being arrested for various reasons.
The caller will then give them the option of sending money instead of being arrested. I can say unequivalently that this is a scam. No one in the court system or in law enforcement is going to call an individual who has an active warrant and demand money for them.
I recommend that anyone who receives one of those calls, tells the person calling that they are going to contact law enforcement, then hang up. Also it is very important that you never give these people any identifying information such as your address social security number etc."
