Officers were notified of a person crawling out of the window of an under construction house on commerce street.

When contact was made with the subject by officers he began screaming profanities and grabbed two large sticks.
He refused please instructions and continued towards north military Street Highway 43. Happy Highway Cpl. Read with the Lawrence County Sheriff's Department was able to tackle the subject when he attempted to strike Loretto Officer Gary Mills.
During the attempted arrest the subject continue to fight while on the highway. Investigator Jeff Dunn with the district attorney's office and his wife observed the fight along with off-duty St Joseph PD officer Jason Jankte.
Both were able to render assistance to the officers involved in the fight and help places the subject and custody.
We are specially thankful for the involvement which led to a safe outcome for all involved. The subject was transported to the Lawrence County jail where he was identified as a Dane Castillo from Washington state. He was charged with criminal trespassing, aggravated assault on an officer, and resisting arrest.
He will appear in general sessions Court and his innocent until proven guilty. We have noted an increase in our homeless population over the last few months. As a community we have always been willing and ready to help someone when they are in need.
However some homeless or trends since people may have illnesses or disorders that often go untreated and lead to them being aggressive and violent. We ask that anyone who chooses to offer help to never do so alone.
Some folks just want to be left alone and may not react well to being contacted. If you have concerns about someone, please contact the Lawrence County e911 Center at 762-0450 to have an officer dispatch to speak with the person and offer assistance.
