Resident is targeted in furniture scam

A Lawrenceburg woman reported to authorities that she had been scammed out of nearly $1,400 recently while trying to sell some furniture online. The victim reported to Lawrenceburg Police officers that she had used an app on her phone to post some furniture for sale.

She said she was contacted by a person interested in buying a piece, and that he sent her a check for $1,480, which was well over the $250 sale price.

The victim said that the man told her she should deposit the check in her checking account. He said she should then wire $1,230 to a moving company so that they could ship the furniture to him.

The victim did as the man said. The following day, she discovered that the balance of her checking account was -$1,480, and that the check had been fake.
