Lawrenceburg Council Votes To Adjust Hours For Beer Sales

Lawrenceburg leaders gave initial approval to an ordinance Thursday that will adjust the hours for beer sales within the city limits.

City Attorney Alan Betz explained both sections of the ordinance to members of the Lawrenceburg Board of Mayor and Council.

He explained that the first portion of the ordinance was a section that was inadvertently left out during a codification process a couple of years prior.

The mistake was caught while records were being reviewed through the Municipal Technical Advisory Service. That section contains a description of the types of beer sales permits that are available.

The second section of the ordinance, Betz said, involves hours during which beer sales are prohibited. He said that in years past the city had adopted hours that mirrored those imposed by county leaders.

At that time beer sales were prohibited between the hours of 2:00 and 6:00 a.m. Monday through Friday and 2:00 and 10:00 a.m. on Sundays.

Betz said that when the city adopted an ordinance governing liquor sales, hours established for the sale of beer were brought into line with those set forth by the Tennessee Alcoholic Beverage Commission for the sale of liquor by the drink.

He said that approval of the ordinance would amend the city’s existing beer ordinance, bringing it back in line with county statutes.

Ordinance 1119 was approved on first reading with a majority vote. Two council members cast “no” votes. The ordinance is scheduled for second and final reading at the council’s next meeting on Thursday, November 14, 2014.
