City of Lawrenceburg Parks Remain Safe for All Visitors

LAWRENCEBURG, TN – The City of Lawrenceburg is committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all residents and visitors in our parks. A recent incident in Veterans Park has raised some concerns, but we want to reassure the public that our parks remain safe for all to enjoy.

On October 16, 2023, Lawrenceburg Police Officers were dispatched to Veterans Park following a tragic incident involving a shooting. Unfortunately, the incident resulted in the loss of life, with Anthony Ferro, a 44-year-old resident of Leoma, losing his life due to an apparent gunshot wound.

Subsequent investigations led to the identification of William Jay Couch, a 33-year-old resident of Leoma, as the suspected shooter. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Deputies acted swiftly, apprehending Couch at his residence, and he was subsequently charged with 1st degree murder. Couch is currently being held at the Lawrence County Jail on a $500,000 bond.

The City of Lawrenceburg wants to emphasize that this was an isolated, targeted incident and does not reflect the overall safety of our parks. Our local law enforcement agencies have been diligent in their response and investigation, ensuring that the incident is thoroughly addressed.

“I would like to reassure the citizens of our community that our parks are safe,” said Pam Hyde, director of Parks and Rec. “The Lawrenceburg Parks & Recreation Department works closely with the Lawrenceburg Police Department to ensure our parks are safe places for families to spend time together and to make memories.”

William Jay Couch is scheduled to appear in Lawrence County General Sessions court on November 2nd for his initial appearance. The City of Lawrenceburg is committed to transparency throughout this process, and we will continue to update the community as the case progresses.

“I want to commend the Lawrenceburg Police Department and the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department on their cooperative efforts in this tragic incident. Our law enforcement agencies are top notch,” said Lawrenceburg Mayor Blake Lay. “Our thoughts and condolences go out to Mr. Ferro's family and friends during this difficult time.”
