Prison inmate charged with murder of cellmate

Press release

An investigation by Special Agents with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has resulted in the indictment of a prison inmate who is charged in the murder of his cellmate.

At the request of 22nd District Attorney General Brent Cooper and with the assistance of the Department of Correction, on April 27th, TBI Agents began investigating the death of an inmate at the South Central Correctional Facility in Clifton.

During the course of the investigation, Agents developed information that on that date, inmate Billy McIllwain assaulted Fidencio Perez during an altercation in their cell. Mr. Perez (DOB 11/16/1966) died as a result of the injuries he sustained during the altercation.

In July, the Wayne County Grand Jury returned an indictment charging Billy Earl McIllwain (DOB 07/24/1979) with one count of 2nd Degree Murder. On Thursday, McIllwain was transported from another facility where he was being held, and booked into the Wayne County Jail without bond.
