Lauderdale County Alabama Judge Self seeks dismissal of ethics charges is still receiving salary.
Less than two months before his scheduled trial on ethics violations, Lauderdale County Circuit Judge Gil Self has filed a motion seeking dismissal of the charges against him.
State auditors previously alleged that Self misused nearly $150,000 in county funds for personal items and travel expenses, prompting felony ethics charges. Despite the indictment, Self continues to draw his full annual salary, which exceeds $150,000.
Pending Trial and Motion to Dismiss
Self’s trial is currently set for this fall. His attorneys argue in their motion that the case should be dismissed due to alleged legal and procedural flaws. Prosecutors, however, maintain that the evidence shows a clear pattern of personal misuse of taxpayer money and that the charges should move forward.
Public Reaction
The case has sparked outrage among many Lauderdale County residents who question why an indicted public official remains in office with full pay. “If it was anyone else, they’d be out of a job,” one courthouse worker told this reporter for Shoals Insider.
As of now, Self continues drawing his salary after several months since his indictment, and now awaiting a ruling on whether his trial will proceed.
Self’s trial is set to begin on October 20.
