Leoma Resident Falls Victim To Fraud Attempt
A resident of the Leoma area summoned Lawrence County Sheriff’s Deputies to her home Monday after she apparently fell victim to a fraud attempt.
Reports filed through the department show that deputies were dispatched to the Morris Road home shortly after 10:00 a.m. The resident, age 64, told deputies she had received a telephone call around 9:59 from a man who claimed to be a representative of Experian Account Services. He told her that he could get her a lower interest rate on her credit cards, indicating all she had to do was give him one of her card numbers. Once he entered that number, he said, he would have access to all her credit accounts. He stated that he would then “try to get her lower rates on all of them.”
The victim told deputies that she gave him the number of her Advance Financial credit card. She stated that the man then asked for a second card number. She then gave him the number to her Capital One credit card.
Becoming suspicious, the victim said she asked the man “if this was a scam and he said ‘no’ and disconnected.”
According to reports the victim immediately notified the two card companies of the situation and had both accounts canceled.
Investigation into the crime is continuing at the present time.
