The City of Lawrenceburg has condemned the Old Armory Building following an extensive review.
City officials explored every option to preserve the historic structure, including renovation, partial restoration, and repurposing the space for future community use.
However, extensive structural damage, along with escalating costs tied to necessary repairs and code compliance, made renovation financially unfeasible.
“We know the old armory holds special memories for many in our community, including me because I played my first basketball games there as a child,” said Mayor Blake Lay. “This was not a decision we made lightly. The City Council and I worked with engineers, financial experts, and community stakeholders to explore all possible paths forward. In the end, the cost to renovate simply outweighed the benefit, and it would not have been a responsible use of taxpayer dollars.”
No immediate decisions have been made regarding future use of the property, but the Mayor and City Council are committed to ensuring the space serves the long-term interests of residents and visitors.
