Iron City Resident Convicted Of Molesting Six Year Old

   A September sentencing hearing has been scheduled for an Iron City resident convicted last week of molesting a young acquaintance.

   Jerry Carter, 45, of 9178 Last Butler Road, Iron City, stood trial last week in Wayne County Circuit Court in connection with the twelve-year-old offense.

   Officials report that the victim, now 18, reported in January, 2006, that the two-year-plus abuse had begun when she was only six. They indicate that she did not tell her family about the abuse until she was sixteen.

   Once a report was made an investigation ensued. Carter was arrested in March of 2006 on charges of rape of a child.

   After hearing evidence in the case for three days, the jury returned to the courtroom with a guilty verdict on the lesser charge of aggravated sexual battery.

   The conviction carries a prison sentence of between eight and twelve years. Because of the nature of the crime, prosecutors indicate Carter will be required to serve 100% of his sentence.

   Carter is slated to stand for sentencing in Wayne County on Thursday, September 4, 2008.
