Metal Thieves Continue Antics
Local authorities warn that even with greater obstacles placed in their paths, metal thieves continue to prove burdensome for area residents.
Authorities indicate that most scrap buyers have implemented precautions that include obtaining copy of a form of photo identification – such as a driver license. In addition, state law will make it mandatory that buyers obtain fingerprints from those wishing to sell such scrap. While many utility systems have initiated plans to convert from copper wire to aluminum, officials point out that the swap-over will be a slow process.
During the weekend residents of Highway 20 in Summertown and Highway 43 in Ethridge reported wire had been stolen from their homes. One resident told Lawrence County Sheriff’s Deputies investigating the crimes that the rolls of wire taken from his home were so heavy that one person could not have taken them alone.
In addition to the wire, both residents reported other nearby items had been stolen, including car wheels, caulk and wire nuts. Loss as a result of the crimes was estimated at $3,600.
Investigation into the crimes is continuing, however authorities warn that the best way to prevent such thefts to secure appealing metal items inside a structure.
