MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WREG) — A Bolton High School student athlete who collapsed during football practice earlier this month has died, his family announced Sunday.
Sixteen-year-old Joshua Henderson had been at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital since July 7. His parents said he collapsed in the heat during football practice.
In the update posted to the GoFundMe page, Joshua’s parents and aunt said he died on Saturday, July 26.
“It is with broken hearts that we share the passing of our beloved Joshua. After bravely fighting for his life in the hospital, Josh transitioned 7/26 due to complications from organ failure caused by a severe heat stroke,” the family said.
“Josh was only 16 years old full of life, laughter, and promise. He was deeply loved by his parents, siblings, extended family, and all who knew him. His sudden loss has left our hearts shattered and our world forever changed.”
The family said his GoFundMe — which has raised $5,770 as of 10 p.m. on Sunday, July 27 — was shifting to cover funeral and burial expenses.
News 2’s sister station, WREG, is attempting to contact the family.
Memphis -Shelby County Schools expressed sympathy for the family, saying in a statement, “He was not only an exceptional athlete and dedicated scholar, but also a source of light and joy to all who knew him. His kindness, determination, and positive spirit left a lasting impression on classmates, teachers, and our entire BHS community.”
