Wheel Tax Increase Garners Final Vote
Lawrence County leaders have approved on final reading a measure that will double the wheel tax currently paid by local residents.
Members of the Lawrence County Commission approved the ordinance to increase the wheel tax rate from $25 annually per vehicle to $50.
During the meeting Tuesday Commissioner Ray Brazier made a motion to allow the measure to be brought up for a referendum vote by the people. When a vote was called the motion failed on a vote of 11 to 5.
The motion to approve the ordinance to double the tax was approved on a 12 to 3 vote.
At this point area residents now have a thirty day period in which to petition to allow a referendum vote to be held. Ten percent of registered voters would have to sign petitions in order for this to occur.
