Resident Avoids Becoming Scam Victim

A resident of the Leoma area avoided becoming the victim of an apparent scam attempt this week after listing items for sale on Craig’s List.

The victim’s daughter reported to Lawrence County Sheriff’s Deputies Tuesday that she had recently listed a washer and dryer for sale for her mother on the popular classifieds website www.craigslist.com. She indicated that she had subsequently received several contacts from a party in Chicago, Illinois, who expressed interest in purchasing the items.

The daughter reported that she had informed the individual that the matched set was for sale for $1,200. She also pointed out that they would only accept cash for the purchase, and that the party had to be willing to make the trip to Tennessee to pick up the machines.

She reported that she had since received a cashier’s check from the individual for the amount of $2,500. She indicated that she, her husband and her mother suspected that the check was counterfeit. When they took it into their bank for inspection, she said bank officials were unable to confirm that the check was legitimate.

As a precautionary measure, she said they wished to file a complaint about the incident and that they had advised Craig’s List officials, as well.
