Florence Police: Woman jumps into car, thwarts attempt to steal vehicle

FLORENCE, Ala. (WAFF) - An Athens woman was arrested after Florence Police said she tried to steal a car.

Police said the incident unfolded at Sonic on Helton Drive.

According to police, the victim saw 60-year-old Sherry White inside her car backing up.

As White was backing up, police said the victim jumped in through the driver side window and was able to put the gear shift into park.

White allegedly got out of the car and hit the victim before employees came outside and told her to stop. She then left the scene before cops arrived.

Police said White later returned to the scene as officers were taking a report.

She was arrested and booked into the Lauderdale County Detention Center on a charge of theft of property 1st degree. Her bond was set at $30,000.
