Clerk Falls Victim To Money Swap Scam

A clerk at a Lawrenceburg business reported to authorities Monday that she had fallen victim to a money-swap scam while working recently.

The twenty-four-year-old woman, a clerk at Shoe Show, 2018 North Locust Avenue, reported that while she was working on July 26, a black male subject entered the store, requesting that she exchange his money for a $100 bill. He then laid on the counter four $20 bills, one $10 bill, and ten $1 bills.

The clerk said that after she handed over the $100 bill the man stated that he had changed his mind, then asked that she give him ten $20 bills for the $200 lying on the counter. The victim told deputies that she handed the man ten $20 bills and that he scooped up the $200 on the counter and handed it to her, then left the premises.

It was not until the man had been gone for some time, the woman reported, that she began to realize he had entered with only $100, but left with $200.

Reports indicate that the matter has been turned over for more in-depth investigation by detectives with the department’s Criminal Investigation Division.
