Weeklong ICE operation in East Tennessee nets 117 arrests

SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — An Immigration and Customs Enforcement operation focused on the Smoky Mountains has resulted in more than 100 arrests. A federal announcement said it was a joint effort between ICE New Orleans and federal, state, and local law enforcement.

The weeklong operation started on May 24 and resulted in a total of 117 arrests. According to ICE, among those arrested are immigrants who were convicted of crimes like theft, domestic assault, and attempted aggravated sexual battery. The department added that some may face additional criminal charges for illegal reentry into the United States.

“In partnership with ICE and other area law enforcement agencies, the Sevierville Police Department is working to create safer streets, protect families, and ensure Sevierville, Sevier County, and East Tennessee remain great places to live, work and enjoy,” said Sevierville Police Deputy Chief Sam Hinson.

6 New previously reported that Sevier County’s 24-hour arrest list showed evidence of possible Immigration and Customs Enforcement actions underway in the county on May 24. At the time, both the SPD and the Sevier County Sheriff’s Office were unable to confirm any potential ICE operations.

ICE added that those with final orders of removal, who re-entered the U.S. after removal, can be deported immediately. However, those without final orders of removal will remain in ICE custody pending immigration court proceedings. This practice has caused ICE to come under fire, with family members of some being held, saying they have not been able to contact or see their loved ones.In October 2025, the Sevier County Sheriff’s Office joined the 287(g) program along with other law enforcement agencies like the Knox, Cumberland, Grainger and Morgan County Sheriff’s Offices. This program allows officers to enforce limited immigration authority during routine police duties. This year, the Tennessee General Assembly also passed a bill requiring sheriff’s offices in Tennessee to enter into a partnership with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement through the 287(g) program.
