Authorities Investigate Death At Jail
Law enforcement officials initiated an investigation during the weekend after an inmate at the Lawrence County Detention Center was found hanging from a bunk inside his cell.
A press release issued through the sheriff’s department indicates that the inmate, identified by family members as Robert Steven Bumpus, Jr., age 37, received attention from corrections officers and the facility’s nursing staff immediately after the incident occurred. Officials report that other inmates were quick to notify them.
Personnel from the Lawrenceburg Fire and Police Departments and Lawrence County EMS were summoned to the scene. District Attorney Mike Bottoms was also notified of the situation and, per protocol, notified the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.
TBI agents also made their way to the detention center. An official investigation will be conducted through that department.
Officials said Bumpus had been incarcerated at the facility on sexual abuse charges since April of 2012.
