Man shot by Columbia officer on Nashville Highway

COLUMBIA, Tenn. (WKRN) — A man was injured when he was shot by an officer while walking on Nashville Highway in Columbia early Tuesday morning.

The Columbia Police Department described the shooting as a “moving situation” in between the 1500 and 1700 block of Nashville Highway around 1 a.m.

According to a press release, officers were called to the area after receiving a report of a “suspicious male walking in the roadway, attempting to approach passing vehicles.”

Arriving officers found the man in the roadway armed with a handgun. They reportedly tried to make him stop and drop his weapon for 10 minutes.

Columbia police stated the man continued to walk southbound while weaving in and out of the roadway and the median.

According to the press release, the man was shot by a Columbia officer as he approached the populated 1500 block of Nashville Highway, “stopping the advancement and threat.”


The shooting victim was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he was taken into surgery. His condition was not immediately released.

No officers were injured in the incident. Per routine, the officer was placed on administrative leave with pay pending the outcome of the investigation.

The shooting prompted a closure of Nashville Highway between Carters Creek and West Burt Drive but the roadway has since reopened to traffic.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has been called to assist with the investigation.
