Youth Fishing Events This Saturday
Saturday, June 7, is Free Fishing Day in Tennessee and some local events have been planned specifically for Lawrence County’s youth.
Lawrenceburg Parks and Recreation and the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency will host their annual Youth Fishing Derby at Bobby Brewer Park Pond on Weakley Creek Road.
This free event is open to youngsters between the ages of 5 and 12. Parental supervision is required. Those interested in participating should bring their own fishing pole, bait, and possibly something to sit on. Prizes will be awarded in various categories.
Registration will get underway at 5:30 a.m. The derby will run from 6:00 until 9:00 a.m. Participants should park at the playground parking lot, then walk behind the Cal Ripkin baseball fields to the pond.
Shortly afterward a Fishing Rodeo will get underway at David Crockett State Park’s Lake Lindsey. This event is open to kids ages 18 and under. Registration will begin at 9:30 a.m. with the actual event to be held between 10:00 a.m. and noon.
At this event limited numbers of fishing equipment will be available on a first come, first serve basis, however parents and participants might need to bring a lawn chair or other seating.
Prizes will be awarded for Biggest Fish and Most Fish caught in age groups of 4 and under, 5 to 11, and 12 to 18. The awards ceremony will begin at 12:30 p.m.
Upon request, lunch is being made available for a small fee from the park’s Crockett’s Mill Restaurant.
A Free Fishing Day event is also planned at Laurel Hill Lake. Lake officials indicate that the three lakes are being stocked with several hundred catfish in preparation for Saturday’s event.
Free drinks will be available while supplies last. Also, participants will be eligible to enter a drawing to be held at 10:00 a.m. Two fishing accessory packages will be given away; one for participants ages 16 and under, the other for those 17 and above.
