Iron City Residents Vote To Do Away With City Government
Residents of Iron City made their way to the polls Tuesday, with the majority voting to dissolve the city government.
The May 25 Iron City Election had been held in order to elect two individuals to fill vacancies on the town’s Board of Commissioners. Candidates Eva Wix and Jeannie Atwell were the candidates listed.
Also on the ballot was a question, inquiring of residents to express their wishes regarding whether to surrender the city’s charter, thus doing away with the city itself. Election officials report that 45 citizens voted “no,” indicating their desire to allow the city to continue as was. Seventy-four voters, however, cast “yes” votes, indicating they wished to surrender the city charter.
With the question answered, officials indicate city officials have sixty days in which to liquidate city assets. Any monies that remain in the city’s General Fund at that point will revert to the Lawrence County General Fund.
