DA Warns Against New Scam

District Attorney Mike Bottoms issued a press release on Monday, alerting residents to a new scam that is circulating throughout the area.

Bottoms said that reports have been received from local residents regarding a letter they received from Estate Trust Asset Recovery of Gainesville, Florida marked “Refund Notice.”

The letter informs the recipient that, “This notice is regarding $707.95 that is currently available in your name. Estate Trust Asset Recovery locates individuals, heirs and companies to confirm their ownership.

We were provided with the above information because we are a governmentally registered agency with the required security clearance and training.”

The recipient is instructed to sign and date an enclosed agreement and mail it in an enclosed postage paid security envelope along with a copy of his/her current driver’s license or state identification card.

The letter instructs, “Please do not send us any money. A processing fee of $79 is sent to our agency by the escrow department after they send you your refund check for $628.95.”

The letter bears the logo of the Better Business Bureau along with an emblem depicting a badge.
Bottoms warns residents, “This letter should be ignored by all parties.”

Anyone seeking additional information should contact Bottoms’ office at 931-762-7777.
