KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — A 4.1 magnitude earthquake was confirmed in near the state border of Tennessee and North Carolina Saturday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
At 9:10 a.m., the USGS confirmed that an 3.5 magnitude earthquake, which was detected across the region as far as Greenback, Maryville, Seymour and Atlanta, Georgia. Around 9:20 a.m., the agency updated the magnitude rating to 4.1.
According to a report from the USGS, the earthquake happened about 12 miles southeast of Greenback around 9:04 a.m. The agency reported that the earthquake was about 16 miles under the surface.
