TBI Crime In Tennessee 2009
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation today released its annual “Crime in Tennessee 2009” for the ninth year in a row.
TBI’s Crime Statistics Unit, housed within the Information Systems Division, uses the numbers submitted by Tennessee law enforcement agencies to the Tennessee Incident Based Reporting System (TIBRS) to compile the statistical report.
The 2009 report shows a 4.5 percent reduction in the number of crimes reported from calendar year 2008. With a state population of approximately 6.2 million, there were 597,748 Group A offenses reported compared to 619,465 in 2008.
Crimes Against Persons made up 28 percent of the crimes and Crimes Against Property was about 60 percent. The number of murders reported in the state increased slightly from 412 in 2008 to 461 in 2009.

Reported Pornography/Obscene Materials increased 62 percent from 2008.
Embezzlement has decreased 34 percent and motor vehicle thefts also saw a 22 percent reduction from the previous year.
41 percent of the homicides occurred between 9:00 PM and 3:00 AM.
Juveniles comprised 13 percent of the total number of arrests which is a 3 percent increase from 2008.
The number of DUIs decreased slightly at 27,635 for 2009.
Wire fraud, which is using an electronic communications device to transmit a deceptive message to commit a fraud, increased 19 percent
