Couple Crashes While Evading Officer
A local couple was transported for medical treatment Sunday evening when they became involved in a motorcycle crash while attempting to evade a traffic stop.
A deputy with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department reported that he attempted to initiate a traffic stop on U.S. Highway 43 in Leoma, when his radar showed that a couple on a motorcycle was traveling at a rate of 96 mph in a 55 mph zone.
The deputy reports he engaged his blue lights and pursued the motorcycle. The driver turned onto Leoma Road, and the deputy indicates he soon lost sight of it. After conducting a search, he reports he left the area.
Approximately five minutes later, the deputy reports a call went out regarding a motorcycle crash at the railroad tracks off Richardson Avenue. He said he responded to find the couple had sustained injuries. He reports that both admitted they had been the ones he had earlier tried to stop.
The driver, Timothy Wade Kirk, 35, of 105 Park Street, Ethridge, reportedly told the deputy “he was trying to evade and did attempt to hide when he wrecked.”
Both Kirk and his passenger/wife, were transported to Crockett Hospital for medical attention.
Kirk was issued citations for speeding and improper display of a license plate. In addition, the deputy obtained warrants charging him with evading arrest and reckless endangerment. Kirk will answer the charges through Lawrence County General Sessions Court on May 16, 2011.
