Controlled Burn Causes Structure Fire
Windy conditions Saturday contributed to a controlled burn fire getting out of hand, igniting a nearby structure.
Officials with Lawrence County Emergency Medical Services explained Saturday evening that a burn permit had been obtained for the controlled burn at the rear of the old Swift Cheese Company on Third Street. Embers from the burn, however, made their way to the roof of the nearby structure, setting it ablaze.
Emergency personnel were quickly summoned to the scene and firefighters were able to save the majority of the roof. The blaze did, however, burn through the roof at the northeast corner of the building, causing it to collapse.
