89 Lake Sturgeon to be released into the Tennessee River today.

Today around 4:00 p.m. students from the Chattanooga Girls Leadership Academy and GPS will join scientists from the Tennessee Aquarium Conservation in releasing 89 Lake Sturgeon into the Tennessee River.

These Sturgeon measure about 15 inches long, more than double the size of the ones typically released by the Aquarium because they were held longer at the Aquarium to better understand any potential effects of using tracking tags to monitor their movement after release.

Sturgeon are listed as endangered in Tennessee as well as 18 other states, but they once thrived in these waterways until they disappeared in the 1970s.

Since the Lake Sturgeon are listed as "Endangered" in Tennessee they may not be harvested, but anglers play a key role in monitoring Lake Sturgeon populations.
