Columbia Pike widening project set to start years ahead of schedule

THOMPSON’S STATION, Tenn. (WKRN) — A much-needed road project is now starting years ahead of schedule thanks to a push from one Middle Tennessee mayor, Brian Stover.

State Route 6, also known as Columbia Pike, Highway 31, and Main Street in Spring Hill, is in need of attention because of how much growth is happening in the area.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation’s 10-year plan includes widening this road to meet those needs, but it wasn’t supposed to get going until 2029. That’s until Mayor of Thompson’s Station, Brian Stover, recently stepped in.

Mayor Stover said last November, he met with TDOT to ask for a speedier timeline for improving Columbia Pike.

The Columbia Pike widening project was scheduled for completion near the end of TDOT’s 10-year plan, which would have delayed the improvement’s completion until 2032, but the Thompson’s Station Board of Mayor and Aldermen approved a $15 million contribution to accelerate the project.

Mayor Stover says he’s thrilled to get started and is especially excited that the widening project will also include bike and pedestrian lanes, “One of our number one goals in Thompson’s Station is connecting everything by a trail system. We are anxiously awaiting to get another one of our TDOT and TDEC grants that we’ve applied for over the years that will also connect the entire town by a trail system by our park systems, through our neighborhoods, it’ll allow people to walk to schools.”

The widening project is set to start in Franklin, extending south through Thompson’s Station and into Spring Hill.
