Authorities in Athens say a mother and a child were killed in a single-vehicle collision
Tuesday afternoon, and another child was hurt.
About six miles west of Athens in Limestone County, the collision happened at 4:05 PM on U.S. 72 close to Lakeview Street. According to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA), Maria Alonzo-Perez, 24, of Athens, suffered fatal injuries after her 2003 Ford Expedition veered off the road and collided with a culvert.
After the initial impact, the car flipped over and collided with several trees and a sign. Alonzo-Perez was declared dead at the scene, according to authorities, and was not wearing a seat belt. In addition, a 5-year-old passenger in the car who was not properly strapped died at the scene after suffering serious injuries.
After being hurt, a 6-year-old traveler was sent to a nearby hospital for medical attention. ALEA’s Highway Patrol Division troopers are still looking into the collision. No other information has been made public.
