2 students killed in crash involving Montgomery County school bus heading to field trip, officials say

CARROLL COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) — Two students aboard a Montgomery County school bus have died and several others are injured following a collision that occurred Friday afternoon in Carroll County.

According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, the crash happened at approximately noon Friday at the intersection of Highway 70 and Cedar Grove.

THP Maj. Travis Plotzer said the crash involved three vehicles: the school bus, a Chevrolet Trailblazer and Tennessee Department of Transportation dump truck.

Officials said they are still investigating what led to the crash, but added it did not appear TDOT had any “contributing factors to the crash.”

There were reportedly 25 students on the bus and five adults. Two students were pronounced dead at the scene, per Plotzer. After holding a press conference about the deadly crash, THP released the following statement:

First and foremost, our hearts are with the families impacted by this devastating loss.

Today around 12:00 p.m., Tennessee Highway Patrol troopers responded to a serious multi-vehicle crash on Highway 70 in Carroll County involving a TDOT dump truck, a Montgomery County school bus, and a passenger vehicle.

The school bus was transporting students on a field trip.

Tragically, two students on the bus were killed. Several others were injured, with multiples airlifted to trauma centers in Nashville and Memphis.

The cause of the crash remains under active investigation. We are working to gather all facts before releasing additional details.
