Florence police confirmed there was an officer-involved shooting Tuesday.
A Florence Police officer and female bystander were shot in the incident, according to police. Police said the officer's injuries are not life-threatening. He was initially treated at North Alabama Medical Center before transport to Huntsville Hospital.
The bystander's injuries also are non-life-threatening, police said.
The suspect is dead.
Highway 72 near Shoals Outdoor Sports is currently closed due to the investigation.
All of eastbound 72 is blocked as of 4:30 p.m. and will be for the foreseeable future.
According to the Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Office and Florence Police, officials responded to a mental health call earlier Tuesday and learned the armed subject went to the PNC Bank on Cox Creek Parkway and robbed it.
A pursuit on Highway 72 followed.
The chase came to an end and the subject fired at officers.
The sheriff’s office said that's when one Florence Police officer and a bystander were shot and taken to the hospital for treatment. The subject connected to the bank robbery died.
Florence Fire Rescue is one of several agencies responding to the scene to provide assistance.
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency's State Bureau of Investigation has been called in to lead the probe. This is standard procedure in most officer-involved shootings.
