ID Theft Victim Targeted In Scam
A Summertown woman who recently became the victim of identity theft was contacted Tuesday by individuals who were the apparent perpetrators of a scam.
According to reports filed through the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department, the victim, age 83, recently became a victim of identity theft in the wake of a break-in at her insurance office in Chattanooga.
On Tuesday, the victim reports she received a telephone call from a woman who identified herself as “Michelle.” The woman stated she was a representative of Global International of 1004 Hill Street, Propasrap, 78602.
She instructed the victim to obtain $300 in cash, then to meet “Josh Thompson” at Walmart at 10:00 that night. She told the victim to give the money to “Josh” and he would tell her “how to collect $750,000.”
The victim told deputies that she informed the woman she would not be able to get the $300 before 10:00 p.m. “Michelle” then told her to instead bring $100. She instructed her to forward the remaining $200 via Western Union at a later time.
The case remains under investigation currently through the Criminal Investigation Division of the sheriff’s department. Anyone who might have information that would assist in the investigation should contact the department at 762-3626.
