Giles County High School teacher charged with solicitation of a minor

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — A teacher in Giles County accused of inappropriate contact with a minor was arrested over the weekend, according to law enforcement.

According to the Giles County Sheriff’s Office, the director of Giles County Schools contacted deputies to report “concerning suspicious activity” that had been uncovered by staff.

Authorities reported the information led to a Steven Hughes arrest Friday night, a now former teacher at Giles County High School. He was booked into jail and charged with solicitation of a minor.

The sheriff’s office said Hughes was not a longtime employee of the school, and was terminated following his arrest. According to the GCHS website, Hughes taught in the agriculture department. Officials added he was not a resident of Giles County.

Giles County School System released the following statement to News 2.

Mr. Hughes no longer works for the Giles County School System. This is an ongoing investigation and no further comments can be made at this time.
