According to Tennessee Governor Bill Lee

TN continues to lead the nation in finding innovative solutions to accommodate growth, & in partnership with The Boring Company, we’re exploring possibilities we couldn’t achieve on our own — at no cost to taxpayers.

I’m grateful for myTDOT’s commitment to a forward-thinking, fiscally responsible approach to infrastructure modernization that will define the future of transportation in our state & beyond.

The Boring Company,
owned by billionaire Elon Musk, announced Wednesday that the tunneling process is officially underway to construct the Music City Loop — an underground tunnel connecting the city’s international airport to downtown.

“Tunneling has begun in Nashville,” the company wrote on X. “We are 2.5 feet in!”

The Boring Company said that the first three weeks of the project will consist of the Prufrock-MB1, a machine that will help carve out the tunnel, being launched and undergoing a series of tests and calibrations. From weeks four to six, the machine will be scaled up to “high production,” and then during week seven, the next generation of the machines, Prufrock-MB2, will arrive at the project site.

The announcement comes just a day after Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee announced that the lease and permit for the Music City Loop project was approved by the state’s Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration. All of the Music City Loop will be available exclusively for Tesla taxis.

The tunnel will connect downtown Nashville with the Nashville International Airport and lower Broadway to West End. It will run beneath state-owned roadways.
