The student was detained and taken to the Rutherford County Juvenile Detention Center with charges pending.

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WSMV) - Charges are pending against a Rutherford County high schooler after the student was found with a gun on Tuesday morning.

The weapons detection system at Riverdale High School alerted authorities to the gun.

The 17-year-old was searched, and the school administration confiscated the gun after it was found in the student’s jacket pocket.

The student was detained and taken to the Rutherford County Juvenile Detention Center with charges pending.

“We know these situations alarm parents, and that’s one reason we insisted on deploying a weapons detection system at every school this year,” Sullivan said. “We are grateful the system is in place to stop weapons from entering our schools,” Rutherford County Schools Director of Schools Dr. Jimmy Sullivan said.

The student is set to be expelled.
