Aircraft emergencies have dominated the national news media for several weeks. The Lawrenceburg Fire Department and Lawrence County Fire Rescue both employ firefighters with specific training in aviation rescue and firefighting.
The Lawrenceburg/Lawrence County Airport (Fleeman Field) is jointly protected from fire by the Lawrenceburg Fire Department and Lawrence County Fire Rescue. The New Prospect Station is only a short distance from the airport.
Additionally, the county is around 50 miles from Huntsville International Airport and less than 100 miles from the BNA in Nashville. Both agencies started making efforts to improve their aircraft incident readiness in 2015.
The Departments have made greater investments in staff and equipment since 2015 to be more equipped to handle aviation-related emergencies than they were previously.
They intend to train even more professionals for airplane rescue in May of this year as part of this strategy. Although research indicates that flying is statistically significantly safer than driving, it is still important to be ready for any potential risks.
