Giles County Sheriff’s Department investigating fatal shooting along I-65

GILES COUNTY, Tenn. (WHNT) – The Giles County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a fatal shooting along I-65 that killed a man and injured his sister.

According to authorities, deputies responded to a car crash with injuries on I-65 around 11:30 p.m. on Sunday.

Deputies said the crash happened after the driver, 26-year-old Sfenson Simeus of Lake Worth, Florida, had been shot at from another car.

Simeus died at the scene. A passenger in his car, Elda Simeus, 23, of Plainfield, Indiana, was also shot. She was brought to a hospital and is listed in stable condition.

After the shooting, Giles County Sheriff Joe Purvis told News 19’s sister station, WKRN, that the victims’ car lost control, jumped the median from the southbound to the northbound lanes, and ended up almost in the trees.

Purvis also described victims as siblings from Haiti with temporary status. He added the pair had just gotten on I-65 after stopping for gas while going from Indiana to Florida, but video shows they didn’t interact with anyone while stopping. Then, less than half a mile south of Exit 22, their car was shot up, with the brother reportedly taking seven rounds in the driver’s seat while the sister was only hit once.

“This was a senseless and cowardly act of violence,” Purvis said. “The sheriff’s office is fully committed to identifying and apprehending the individual responsible and ensuring justice for the Simeus family.”

Purvis told WKRN the suspect’s vehicle is a dark-colored pickup truck.Anyone with information is asked to contact the Giles County Sheriff’s Department at 931-363-3505.
