MARTIN, Tenn. (WREG) — A deputy with the Weakley County Sheriff’s Office was shot and killed while responding to a call early Friday morning in Martin.
According to the Martin Police Department, officers were sent to a disturbance call just before 3 a.m. regarding possible shots fired at a Days Inn in the 800 block of University Street.
Deputies from the Weakley County Sheriff’s Office were also called to assist on the scene, officials said.
As deputies arrived, they reportedly saw a vehicle leaving Pocket’s gas station on 821 University Street. According to authorities, the driver of the vehicle then fired shots, striking one of the deputies.
Martin Police responded to the shooting scene and were able to arrest the suspect.
Meanwhile, the injured deputy was taken to Volunteer Community Hospital and later died.
There is no continued threat to the public, police say, and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has been requested to investigate the deadly incident.
