Subject: Residential Structure Fire

Shortly before 6:00 this morning Lawrence County Fire Rescue units were dispatched to a residential structure fire on Old Jackson Hwy near the Busby Rd intersection in the Leoma Fire District. First arriving units reported heavy fire conditions. Our personnel were unable to locate the residents of the home at the scene. Firefighters conducted a primary and secondary interior search of the residence. The residents were not in the home. Personnel worked to extinguish the fire, but were forced to overcome the difficulty of a frozen fire hydrant and a frozen fire pump related to the frigid temperatures. The temperature at the time of the fire was 9 degrees.
The occupants of the home were located later in the day. Statements from one of the occupants of the home indicate that they were awakened by a roaring noise from the attic that led to the discovery of a fire involving the wood heater that had extended to the attic. One occupant of the home stated that they tried to extinguish the fire for nearly 30 minutes before calling 911 and leaving the home. Initial information indicates that working smoke alarms were not present inside the home. Fire investigators are still working to complete the investigation.
Responding LCFR Stations include Leoma, Crossroads, Center Point, West Point, and South East. Loretto Fire Department also responded to the scene as the result of a mutual aid request.
