LCSO identifies man killed when Florence Police say he tried to shoot up department

FLORENCE, Ala. (WHNT) — The Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a deadly shooting involving officers that took place in the Florence Police Department’s parking lot.

The shooting happened around 5:30 p.m. when Florence Police Chief Mike Holt said a man called 911 and told the operator that he was going to shoot the police department up.

Holt said the man came to the police department and began shooting. Officers returned fire, killing the man.

The man was later identified as Jackson Paul Jones, 33, of Florence by the Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Office.

“Very close to home,” Holt said. “But, that’s the world we are in.”

Holt confirmed that no officers were injured during the shooting. FPD said that due to department protocol, one officer is on administrative leave following the incident.

The Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation.

Sheriff Joe Hamilton said investigators processed the scene and took possession of Jones’s handgun, cell phone and vehicle. He added that Jones was sent to state forensics for autopsy and toxicology to be performed.

Hamilton said that investigators will be interviewing officers, reviewing body camera and surveillance footage and examining Jones’s cell phone and vehicle over the course of the investigation.

Once the investigation is completed, the findings will be turned over to a Lauderdale County Grand Jury.
