Council Moving Forward With Landfill Expansion
Lawrenceburg leaders voted Thursday to move forward with a proposed expansion project at the demolition landfill.
Engineer Garland Stone addressed members of the Board of Mayor and Council, urging them to move forward with the project in order to avoid future complications.
He reminded them that during the last expansion the landfill reached capacity before a new permit could be obtained, forcing the city to transport refuse to another county at great cost.
Stone recommended that council members vote to initiate the two-year permit process as soon as possible.
Stone explained that the current landfill has been filled to approximately 50% of capacity. He said that changes with International Paper Company have resulted in a drastic increase in the amount of refuse being disposed of at the site. At the current rate, he said they will reach capacity in between 1 ½ and 2 years.
Stone recommended that the council move forward with plans to obtain an additional 32 acres of land near the existing landfill. The property is located adjacent to the Murray Superfund, therefore it is unsuitable for any other purpose.
Council members voted to file the needed paperwork with the state and spend $5,000 for land appraisal.
