New Tennessee law in 2026 aimed at providing more safety for bicyclist.

On January 1st, 2026, the SB1420 now requires new drivers to learn hand signals used by bicyclists.
This will allow better communication between drivers and bicyclists.
The signals include left-turn, right-turn, and slowing down or stopping.
Left-hand turn: Left arm stuck
Left-hand turn: Left arm stuck straight out
Right-hand turn: Right arm struck straight out or left hand extended up
Slowing down or stopping: Extending the arm downwards.
With the increase of bicyclist accidents throughout Tennessee this new law will help bring more safety to them on the roadways.
Tennessee Safety Highway Patrol says a bicycle has the legal status of a vehicle. Meaning bicyclists have full rights on the roadway.
This new law is in effect.
