Charges Issued After 911 Hang Up

Charges were issued against a local man late last week after he allegedly assaulted his girlfriend and prevented her from making a 911 call for help.

When officers with the Lawrenceburg Police Department arrived at the Belew Drive residence Friday afternoon, they found that the victim, age 36, had sustained injuries during the altercation.

The victim reported that earlier in the day she and her boyfriend, Brian Keith Martin, age 34, had begun to argue.

She said that she attempted to leave, but while she was exiting Martin shut the door on her, slapped her across the face, then held her down so that she could not leave. She told officers that she had made a 911 call but was unable to talk because of the way he was holding her.

Officers checked with Lawrence Central Dispatch and learned that they had received a call from the victim’s cell phone. The dispatcher reported that the victim had disconnected, causing them to be unable to pinpoint her location or re-establish contact.

The victim told officers that once things calmed down she was able to exit the home and place a 911 call. She said that she needed police assistance because Martin would not allow her to leave with her child.

When they questioned Martin about the incident he reportedly told them that he had closed the door “because he didn’t want her to leave.” Reports show that he denied having assaulted the victim.

Because the victim had sustained bruises to her face, arm, and hip, Martin was placed under arrest on a charge of domestic assault. He was subsequently incarcerated at the Lawrence County Detention Center. He will be required to answer the charge in General Sessions Court on December 5, 2014.
