Plea Entered In Kilburn Murder

The last of three defendants accused in connection with the July 2008 slaying of a Lawrenceburg man has entered a guilty plea, rather than stand trial.

Reports filed through the Lawrenceburg Police Department at that time showed that officers were dispatched to 1220 Marion Drive just before 9:00 p.m. the evening of Sunday, August 11, 2008. on reports of a shooting. When they arrived they reported finding James L. “Jay” Kilburn, age 31, lying in the parking lot with a single gunshot wound to the chest. Kilburn was transported by ambulance to Crockett Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

In the wake of the ensuing investigation three men were taken into custody at a home in Giles County. Shawn C. Brooks, 28, of 1000 Clearview Avenue was arrested on one count of first degree murder, while both Jacob R. Mowrey, 25, of 2021 Womble Springs Road, Ethridge, and Jimmy L. Vanderford, 23, of 225 Hood Hollow Road, Five Points, were arrested on one count each of first degree murder criminal responsibility for the conduct of another. While Brooks was the suspected trigger man, authorities alleged that Mowrey and Vanderford had conspired and participated in the altercation. They indicate that Kilburn’s girlfriend was an acquaintance of one of the arresttees.

Officials indicated that a domestic altercation had apparently escalated into the shooting. They indicate that Kilburn was shot outside his girlfriend’s home.

Both Mowrey and Brooks previously entered into plea bargain agreements and are currently serving their sentences.

On Thursday of last week Vanderford appeared in Lawrence County Circuit Court where he entered a guilty plea to the lesser charge of solicitation of second degree murder. Under the agreement Vanderford was given a three-year sentence. He will serve the remainder of his sentence on probation. If he successfully adheres to all conditions of his probation, Vanderford will be permitted a post plea diversion, allowing him to have the crime expunged from his record.
