Man Arrested After Pushing Restaurant Patron, Assaulting Officer

An Alabama man was arrested Friday night after he allegedly shoved a patron of a restaurant, then assaulted a police officer.

Saint Joseph Police Chief Adam Brewer reports that the incident occurred around 11:45 p.m. at Cowpen Grille. While officers were conducting a bar check, Brewer said patrons and staff reported a man was harassing customers and attempting to start fights. While they were taking the information from complainants, officers reported seeing the man assault one patron by pushing him.

Brewer reports that the aggressor, Richard James Howard, 40, of 6621 County Road 94, Killen, Alabama, appeared to be intoxicated. Officers informed Howard that he would need to obtain a sober ride home and leave the restaurant “before there were any more problems.”

At this point, officers reported Howard became belligerent, refusing to leave. When they attempted to place Howard under arrest and handcuff him, they report he resisted, then attempted to assault one of the officers. Brewer reports officers then “took Howard to the ground” and placed him under arrest.

Officers were in the process of escorting Howard to a patrol car when they report a woman exited the building, yelling obscenities and acting in an aggressive manner. As a result she, also, was taken into custody.

Howard was booked through the Lawrence County Detention Center charges of disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, public intoxication and assault of a police officer.

The woman, Heather Mae Peters, 37, of Killen, was booked under charges of public intoxication and disorderly conduct.

Both Howard and Peters are scheduled to answer the charges against them in Lawrence County General Sessions Court on September 20, 2011.
