Three Arrested In Sunday Night Murder
Three local men were placed under arrest in the wake of a shooting incident Sunday night that left one man dead.

Lawrenceburg Police Chief Judy Moore reported Monday morning that investigators with her department remained in the field collecting evidence in the case, and that arrests had already been made.

Officers with the department were dispatched to 1220 Marion Drive just before 9:00 p.m. Sunday evening regarding the shooting. When they arrived at the scene officers report finding one white male lying in the parking lot. He had sustained a single gunshot wound to the chest.

According to reports the victim, James Allen “Jay” Kilburn, Jr., 31, of Lawrenceburg, was transported by ambulance to Crockett Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

In the wake of the ensuing investigation, Moore reports that three men were taken into custody. Shawn C. Brooks, 28, of 1000 Clearview Avenue was arrested on one count of first degree murder, while both Jacob R. Mowrey, 25, of 2021 Womble Springs Road, Ethridge, and Jimmy L. Vanderford, 23, of 225 Hood Hollow Road, Five Points, were arrested on one count each of first degree murder criminal responsibility for the conduct of another. The three were apprehended around 5:00 a.m. Monday at a residence in Giles County.

While Brooks is the suspected trigger man, authorities allege that Mowrey and Vanderford conspired and participated in the altercation. They indicate that Kilburn’s girlfriend was an acquaintance of one of the arresttees.

Officials indicated that a domestic altercation had apparently escalated into the shooting. They indicate that Kilburn was shot outside his girlfriend’s home.

The trio was transported to the Lawrence County Jail where at press time they remained incarcerated without bond.

Brooks, Vanderford and Womble are scheduled for arraignment in Lawrence County General Sessions Court on Monday, August 18, 2008.
