A local father and son escaped injury during the weekend when their car caught fire while they were driving in the Five Points area.

The father reported to deputies with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department that he and his son had been driving along Second Creek Road around 8:15 p.m. when they noticed smoke coming from their 2005 Nissan Maxima.

Reports indicate that the pair quickly stopped and exited the car. By this point they were able to see flames rising from the vehicle. The car, valued at approximately $10,000, was deemed a total loss.

Members of the Southeast and Center Point Fire Departments responded to the scene to extinguish the blaze.
