TBI Releases Statistical Study On DUI, Rape and Robbery In Tennessee Over A Five Year Period


Nashville, TN- The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation today released a study to review data contained in the TBI’s Criminal History Records system which focused on recidivism for the offenses of DUI, Rape and Robbery between 2002 and 2007.


The Criminal History Records system is the database created by law enforcement submitting fingerprints to TBI upon an arrest. The study looked at offenders who were arrested again for the same offense within the five-year span.


• During the study period, there were a total of 137,183 arrests for DUI. A total of 21% were rearrested for violating the DUI law at least two times within the chosen timeframe and 34% of the repeat offenses occurred within 0-6 months of the original arrest date.


• There were 3,269 arrests for Rape in the five-year study. Only 6% were rearrested for Rape within the time perimeters. Nearly 45% of the repeat arrests occurred within 0-6 months of the original arrest date.


• Law enforcement made 11,549 arrests for Robbery which is the intentional knowing theft of property from the victim by putting the victim in fear. Only 16% of offenders were rearrested for Robbery between 2002 and 2007. Nearly half of those arrests happened within 0-6 months of the original offense.
